The Celtic Lands

The first surviving literature referring to the Celts dates from 4th and 5th century BC writings of Herodotus, Ephorus, and (by reference) Hecataeus.

The Celts are thought to be any number of Indo-European peoples who in prehistory made the trek from the region of today's India across Europe. Many came to settle the British Isles, but others turned back towards the Anatolian region of Turkey, and groups -- the tribal unit was important -- settled in, and greatly influenced, the regions of Europe that became their homes. The Celts never called themselves this; they did not see themselves as a cohesive group, but they all share a common base language / language structure, and their means of governance, religious life, and customs all also seem to share a common denominator. Until influenced by the Romans and others, they had no form of writing, relying apparently on rote memory passed down from generation to generation. Needless to say, there are many major gaps in our knowledge of these peoples.
